Hello all... Yes I am in Ottawa for three weeks to help launch the first ever Veterans Transition Program (VTP) in ON! We are very excited about this as we have a full curse of 8 veterans attending the maiden voyage. I am a grade of the program myself which I write about in my upcoming book "Warrior Rising". I now work as a veteran facilitator on the program and really enjoy seeing veterans get well again! If you are interested in this free to veterans program, check out VTNCANADA.ORG for more info. You could also ask me through this site if you prefer. Cheers CJL
The more I discover about PTSD among veterans, the more I discover how their families suffer along as well. It makes sense that when the person going off to war becomes profoundly impacted by what they see and experience, it only makes sense that loved ones would also feel the brundt of that when they retrun to home life. At present there is very little going on in this country regarding the impact of PTSD on families. This needs to change! The Vanier Institute of the Family, a
Partnership Between Family Care Professionals and the Canadian Forces has instigated a conference in Cornwall next month to examine the impact of PTSD upon the family and come up with a game plan as to how to best manage it. Excellent! CJL
I have discovered over the past several years that there are many ways to battle down PTSD symptoms... I found that being in a group of similarly injured veterans where you didn't have to explain things or worry about judgement to be very healthy. Outward Bound Canada has a program for vets that challenges you physically during the day and has you engaged in conversation with peers in the evenings about military experiences both good and bad. The Veterans Transition Program or VTP is another excellent group based program geared towards vets havingcoping issues. I have done both of these and found my health improve significantly. Anyone have others they have found useful? CJL
So many have asked me if I am now cured... I still have PTSD and from time to time I still feel its ugly sting! Sometimes the sight of a bunch of kids, the smell of blood in the meat section at the grocery store, or a loud siren passing by. These things can and do trigger me but they no longer kick my ass. I have new tools to assist me in staying calm while I recognize the stimulus and then refrain from engaging with it. This took time to do well and still I struggle as sometimes the PTSD symptom has me before I can have it! This keeps me humble about my injury and I continue to respect its power. Take the time to develop your tools i
Well I finally had my time in front of the Den's Associate Producers for the audition to Dragon's Den.... It was an excellent exerience and not as stressfull as you might think. I pitched my Warrior Rising book and new company and they seemed to appreciate the concept expressing interest and consideration. I will know by end March as taping will commence soon after in April. If I am selected to appear on the show it will be in Toronto and will air late summer early fall.. If I am able to partner with the Dragon's I am hoping they will be able to provide excellent advice and guidance as to how to build the Warrior Rising brand and help me get the message of hope and healing out into the worldWish me luck!
